The Mother of God Tricherousa (also called “Three-Handed Theotokos”) is a famous Orthodox icon associated especially with Mount Athos and the Hilandar Monastery. According to tradition, the icon is linked to St. John of Damascus, who had his hand miraculously restored after being unjustly punished; in gratitude, a silver votive hand was attached to the icon, which later became visually interpreted as a “third hand.” Over time, this led to the icon being called “Tricherousa” (“three-handed”). In Orthodox tradition, the icon is venerated as miracle-working, and it symbolizes healing, protection, and the intercessory power of the Theotokos (Mother of God). It remains one of the most well-known Marian icons in Eastern Orthodoxy.
