Rila Monastery, located in the Rila Mountains of Bulgaria, is the largest and most famous Bulgarian Orthodox monastery, founded in the 10th century by St. Ivan of Rila. Over the centuries, it was destroyed and rebuilt several times, with the current main complex constructed in the 19th century during the Bulgarian National Revival, combining defensive walls, churches, residential buildings, and artistic frescoes. Built around a central courtyard, the monastery features a unique mix of Byzantine and Bulgarian architectural styles, richly decorated with murals and icons. It has served as a center of spiritual life, education, and Bulgarian culture, symbolizing both Orthodox faith and national identity.
