Mount Athos is a self-governed Orthodox monastic region in northern Greece, often called the “Holy Mountain,” dedicated entirely to prayer, asceticism, and monastic life since the Byzantine era. It grew into a major spiritual center of the Byzantine Empire and has preserved ancient Orthodox traditions, liturgy, iconography, and manuscript culture for over a thousand years. Today it remains a living monastery complex where monks continue a strict rhythm of worship, silence, and communal life, largely untouched by modern change.
