Ignatius of Antioch was an early Christian bishop of Antioch who lived in the late 1st and early 2nd centuries. According to tradition, he was a disciple of the Apostles and one of the most important witnesses to the faith of the early Church. While being taken to Rome for execution, he wrote a series of letters encouraging Christians to remain united under their bishops, defend true doctrine, and stay faithful to Christ. He was martyred in Rome around AD 107 and is especially honored for his strong teachings on the Eucharist, Church unity, and the authority of bishops. His writings provide some of the earliest evidence of Christian beliefs and church structure after the apostolic age.
