Herman of Alaska was an 18th–19th century Orthodox monk and missionary who traveled from Russia to Alaska to bring Christianity to the native peoples. Living a humble and ascetic life on Spruce Island, he became known for his compassion, miracles, and defense of the indigenous Alaskans against exploitation by colonial authorities and traders. Though not a priest, he served as a spiritual father, caring for orphans, teaching the faith, and living in deep prayer and simplicity. He is remembered as the first Orthodox saint of North America and a model of humility, love, and missionary service.
