St. Gregory Palamas (1296–1359) was a Byzantine monk, theologian, and later Archbishop of Thessaloniki, known for defending Hesychasm, a mystical practice of contemplative prayer emphasizing inner stillness and the experience of God’s uncreated light. He argued that humans could encounter God directly through prayer while maintaining a distinction between God’s essence and energies. Palamas became famous for his theological struggle against Barlaam of Calabria, who criticized Hesychasm and claimed humans could not experience God directly; through this dispute, Palamas defended the possibility of a real, experiential union with God. He is remembered for his spiritual writings, theological clarity, and as a major figure in Eastern Orthodox thought, celebrated for his teaching on the transformative power of divine grace.
