Maximus the Confessor was a 7th-century monk, theologian, and one of the greatest defenders of Orthodox Christianity. He fiercely opposed the heresy of Monothelitism, which taught that Christ had only one will, arguing instead that Christ possesses both a divine will and a human will in perfect harmony. For refusing to compromise his beliefs, he was imprisoned, tortured, and exiled; his tongue was cut out and his right hand was severed to silence his teaching. Despite this, his theology ultimately prevailed and was affirmed by the Church. He is remembered as a profound spiritual writer whose teachings on deification, free will, and union with God have had a lasting influence on Eastern Orthodox theology.
