First Council of Nicaea was the first ecumenical council of the Christian Church, held in AD 325 in the city of Nicaea (modern-day İznik, Turkey) under Emperor Constantine I. Its main purpose was to deal with the Arian controversy, which denied the full divinity of Christ.
The council produced the original Nicene Creed, affirming that the Son is “of the same essence” as the Father, establishing a foundational statement of orthodox Christian belief about the Trinity. It also set early rules for Church order and tried to unify Christian practice across the empire, including the method for calculating the date of Easter.
It is considered a defining moment in Christian history because it marked the first major, empire-wide effort to define doctrine and unify the Church under a common confession of faith.
