The Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius in Sergiev Posad, Russia, is one of the most important monasteries of the Russian Orthodox Church and a major spiritual center of Orthodox Christianity. It was founded in the 14th century by St. Sergius of Radonezh and grew into a powerful religious, cultural, and political institution, even serving as a place of refuge and resistance during invasions. Over time it became closely tied to Russian rulers and church leadership, and its complex of cathedrals, towers, and walls reflects centuries of expansion. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and remains an active monastery as well as a major pilgrimage destination.
