The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow is the largest Russian Orthodox cathedral and one of the most important religious symbols in Russia. It was originally completed in the 19th century to commemorate Russia’s victory over Napoleon, but it was destroyed in 1931 during the Soviet era and replaced with a planned swimming pool. After the fall of the Soviet Union, it was rebuilt in the 1990s and early 2000s, reopening in 2000. Today it serves as both a major place of worship and a national symbol of Russian religious revival.
