St. Basil the Great (c. 329–379) was the Bishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia and a key figure in Orthodox Christianity. He is best known for defending the divinity of Christ against Arianism, promoting the Nicene faith, and shaping monasticism with his rules for communal life that balanced prayer, work, and charity. Basil also cared deeply for the poor, establishing hospitals and charitable institutions, and wrote influential theological works on the Holy Spirit, the Trinity, and Christian living. His legacy inspired the famous St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow, named in his honor, and he is celebrated as one of the Three Holy Hierarchs in Eastern Orthodoxy.
