St. Athanasius (c. 296–373) was the Bishop of Alexandria and a key defender of Orthodox Christianity. He is best known for opposing Arianism, which denied Christ’s divinity, and for articulating the doctrine of the Trinity. As a young deacon, he played a crucial role at the First Council of Nicaea in 325, defending Christ’s divinity and helping shape the Nicene Creed. Throughout his life, he was repeatedly exiled by Roman emperors who supported Arianism, yet he continued to write and guide the Church, demonstrating remarkable courage and perseverance. Athanasius also promoted monasticism in Egypt, including supporting St. Anthony the Great, and is remembered for his theological insight, steadfast devotion, and unwavering commitment to the truth of Christ.
