Ichthys (ΙΧΘΥΣ) is an early Christian symbol made from the Greek word for “fish,” which also forms an acronym: “Jesus Christ, Son of God, Savior.” It was used by early Christians as a secret sign of identification during periods of persecution in the Roman Empire.
In Orthodox tradition, it represents faith in Christ and the confession of His identity as Lord and Savior. The fish symbol also connects to Christ’s miracles, such as the feeding of the multitudes, and to the calling of the apostles as “fishers of men.” It remains a simple but powerful sign of Christian belief and identity.
